If you think you might have ADHD, who can you go to for an adult ADHD assessment? Well, if you live in New Zealand, it's always worth checking with your GP first. Some GPs and nurse practitioners with a specific interest in ADHD can now assess, diagnose and initiate treatment without needing a psychiatrist referral, although this varies between practices.
At ADHD Wellbeing we're ADHD coaches. We offer ADHD coaching and AuDHD coaching, which you can access with or without a diagnosis. We do not offer ADHD assessment or diagnosis ourselves.
If your GP practice doesn't have a doctor or nurse practitioner who can assess for ADHD and prescribe medication, seeing a psychiatrist may be your next step. Here are a few psychiatry practices we're aware of that assess adults for ADHD.
This is not a list of recommendations. It's not exhaustive, and we don't have a financial or professional relationship with any of these practices. We're based in Wellington, and the list below strongly reflects that. Details like referral pathways, fees and wait times change, so please confirm directly with each provider before getting in touch with them.
Dr Sally Rimkeit, The Dunes Practice
In-person psychiatry in Hataitai, Wellington, covering adult mental health including ADHD.
Dr Kang Tan, KT Psychiatry
In-person specialist psychiatry in central Wellington. A GP referral is needed in most cases.
Dr Peter Cowley, Better Mood
In-person consultant psychiatry and therapy across the greater Wellington region. Both GP and self-referrals are accepted.
AncorA (Dr Rosie Edwards)
A dedicated ADHD clinic offering nationwide assessment, diagnosis and treatment by telehealth for people aged 17 and over.
Dr Zenaida Tenea, Zen Psychiatry
In-person psychiatry in central Wellington, covering a broad range of adult mental health conditions including ADHD.
Psychiatry.nz (Dr Lim and colleagues)
A nationwide telepsychiatry service offering ADHD assessments. GP referral is preferred where possible.
Romans Davison (Dr Sarah Romans and Dr Mary Davison)
A central Wellington practice offering both in-person and remote appointments. At the time of writing, Dr Romans is not accepting new referrals, and neither psychiatrist sees clients under 20, so it's worth checking current availability before reaching out.
ADHD support while you're waiting for an assessment
At ADHD Wellbeing, we don't provide ADHD assessments or diagnosis. We do work with people in person or online, before and after diagnosis, including people who are still figuring out whether they want to pursue an assessment. ADHD coaching can also be useful while you're waiting for an appointment, particularly if you want some practical strategies in the meantime. If you'd like to talk through whether coaching might help, get in touch to book a free initial chat.
